Empty the appliance, handle water and power connections safely, dry the interior, measure the exit route, and leave the sealed refrigeration system intact. Those five steps prevent most pickup-day delays.
Start with food, shelves, and ice
Move food to another cold location before the pickup day. Remove loose shelves, drawers, bins, and ice trays so they cannot shift while the unit is tilted. If frost has built up, follow the manufacturer’s defrost instructions and give the interior time to dry. A damp freezer can leave water along the entire carrying route.
Make the utility boundary clear
Unplug the appliance only after following the manufacturer’s shutdown guidance. Refrigerators with an ice maker or water dispenser may also have a supply line. Arrange qualified help if the connection is unfamiliar or difficult to reach. Do not cut refrigerant tubing, remove the compressor, or puncture the sealed system. The EPA advises consumers not to tamper with refrigerant-containing appliances before disposal.
Measure the real route
Measure the cabinet width and depth, then the narrowest doorway, hall turn, gate, stair landing, and elevator opening. Include the handles unless they will be removed. Check whether an exterior door can open fully and whether a truck can stop near the exit without blocking a fire lane or shared drive.
Decide whether doors must come off
A refrigerator that fit during construction may not clear the finished doorway with its handles and doors attached. Compare the manufacturer’s case-depth measurement with your narrowest opening. If door removal is needed, identify that before pickup and follow the manufacturer’s instructions or use qualified appliance help.
Choose the right disposal route
Manteca residents have municipal options, including district cleanup events that accept appliances and a bulky-item request system. Those programs may require proof of residency, self-unloading, curb placement, or a scheduled confirmation. An in-home hauling request solves a different access problem, so compare the rules with the help you need.
